In our previous article What Exactly Does Your NSE Stockbroker Do Behind the Scenes? , we looked at the role of stockbrokers in Kenya. In this article we look at the different stockbrokers in Kenya, their locations, charges and strengths that will help determine the stockbroker for you.
Honestly, choosing the right stockbroker in Kenya can quietly have a bigger impact on your long-term returns than picking the right stock. That may sound extreme, but it is very accurate. The major difference between Ziidi Trader and the listed stockbrokers is its structure. For investors using the Ziidi Trader, they do not need a personal CDS account. This is because shares are held in a pooled CDS account, individual ownership is recorded digitally within the MPESA app and Safaricom works with a licensed broker, Kestrel Capital. The brokerage rate is about 1.50%, but it has no minimum fee, which changes everything for micro-investors.
Keynote on fees: Individual broker commission rates (typically between 1.5% and 2.1%) are negotiable for institutional or high-volume clients and may vary slightly. Always request a full fee schedule from your chosen broker before opening an account and verify their CMA license at licensees.cma.or.ke. Every NSE stockbroker has two unavoidable layers. The statutory levies (0.30% total) go to regulators and are identical no matter which broker you pick. The broker commission is the only part that varies between firms.
Among the brokers that have published their rate tiers, AIB-AXYS Africa's Digi Trader app charges a transaction fee of 1.63% and an annual account maintenance fee of KES 200 making it the lowest flat rate among major brokers. Sterling Capital charges 1.8% for transactions above KES 100,000 and 2.1% below. Dyer & Blair charges 1.84% above KES 100,000 and 2.13% below. SBG Securities charges 1.85% above KES 100,000 and 2.12% below. Faida Investment Bank charges 1.84% above KES 100,000 and 2.1% below.
