At Urim Trader, we focus on what drives investor interest. This week, Absa Bank Kenya stands out as a top choice. In this article, we analyse why investors are buying Absa shares with such momentum.
First, Absa began the year 2026 at Ksh. 24. 24,70 per share. It has since gained roughly 20% year-to-date and reached its high of Ksh. 33 on 27th February 2026. The share price is now at sh.28 per share as of 5th May 2026. This kind of momentum for a banking counter is hard to ignore, which explains why the stock is attracting attention.
Secondly, Absa Bank released its FY2025 results. From the financial results, the company reported a 10% increase in profits, a 6% increase in assets, and an increase in earnings per share from Ksh. 3.86 to Ksh. 4.22. Its operating expenses decreased by 14%, while interest income increased by 12%. These figures reflect improvements in the bank’s portfolio quality, aggressive recoveries, and sovereign rating upgrades, reducing the impact of government-linked exposures. Additionally, the bank’s non-performing loan (NPL) ratio reduced to 11.4%, compared to the banking industry average NPL ratio of 15.5%.
With this strong performance, the board proposed a total dividend of Ksh. 2.05, which is a 17% increase from 2024. The total dividend includes a Ksh. 0.20 interim dividend and a Ksh. 1.85 final dividend. Over the last five years, the bank has achieved consecutive annual dividend growth, attracting dividend-seeking investors.
Thirdly, and most importantly, the bank’s acquisition plan at both the local and group levels. At the local level, Absa Bank plans to acquire another Kenyan lender to expand its lending capacity to small and medium businesses and increase its share of the retail banking market. At the group level, the bank has approved the plan to accelerate its pan-African expansion. The group is now open to new opportunities across Africa following its acquisitions in Uganda and Mauritius. Absa Bank is among the top five largest banks in Kenya. These acquisitions could accelerate the bank's position in the industry, making it transformative.
In preparation for this, Absa Bank Group has introduced a new revenue stream, the Absa Wealth program, which is gradually taking shape. This program aims to provide personalized banking and wealth management services to help individuals grow and protect their wealth. The services range from investment advisory to affluent banking, which are part of the incredible transformation that investors are keen on.
These factors are some of the major reasons for the investor’s optimism and confidence in Absa Bank as an NSE counter. However, as an investor, it is important to consider the risks associated with a specific counter, in this case, Absa Bank. The CBK rate cuts have not yet been fully reversed, which reduces the bank’s net interest income, so lending margin rates remain under pressure. At the same time, Absa has lost its scale, especially in the retail markets. Its position in the retail market is not dominant, which is a gap that may take years to close.
Absa Bank stands out as a fundamentally strong and solid institution. Its improved profitability, consistent dividend growth, and forward-thinking acquisition strategies firmly position it as an attractive NSE counter. The compelling performance and strategic direction indicate that investor interest in Absa Bank is justified and likely to remain strong.
